Hero (2002)

Movie Review

Directed by: Zhang Yimou

Starring: Jet Li, Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Chen Daoming, Zhang Ziyi, and Donnie Yen

Zhang Yimou directs this martial arts epic which stars Jet Li as an unnamed warrior who claims to have defeated three would-be assassins of the king of Qin (Chen Daoming).  The nameless warrior is brought before the king to recount the tale of how he defeated the three warriors: Sky (Donnie Yen), Flying Snow (Maggie Cheung) and Broken Sword (Tony Leung).  Via flashbacks, Nameless vividly describes each battle with the infamous warrior assassins.  The ever paranoid king is skeptical of Nameless’ tales.  As the film unfolds, we discover that all is not as it appears to be.

True to director Yimou’s style in the wuxia film genre, Hero is filled with jaw-dropping martial arts sequences, a spectacular use of color and nature, and courageous, honorable characters.
