Ray (2004)

Movie Review

Directed by: Taylor Hackford

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Regina King, and Kerry Washington

The musical biopic Ray chronicles the life and career of Ray Charles, one of the most popular and influential musicians of the 20th century.  Charles established a unique sound to his music by creatively combining elements of R&B, gospel, and jazz.  He was an iconic soul singer and a pioneer in American music.  When I first heard that Jamie Foxx was portraying Ray Charles in this musical, I was a bit disappointed.  After all, Foxx was only known as a comedian who had dabbled a bit in music.  At that point in his career, he hadn't really proven himself to be a heavyweight in acting or music.  After seeing the film, I was not only pleasantly surprised but also really impressed with Foxx's surreal transformation into one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.  Foxx's acting was eerily perfect, and the music was true to the source material.  Ray is one film you can't miss.
