This Christmas (2007)

Movie Review

Directed by: Preston A. Whitmore II

Starring: Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Loretta Devine, Chris Brown, Columbus Short, Regina King, Sharon Leal, Lauren London, and Jessica Stroup

When families get together at Christmas time, there’s always drama.  So when the Whitmore family gets together with all the children back home for the first time in four years, drama is no stranger to the festivities.  Quentin Whitfield Jr. (Idris Elba) returns home for the first time in four years to Ma’Dere’s (Loretta Devine) place.  He brings his baggage with him, including his dislike for Ma’Dere’s significant other Joe Black (Delroy Lindo) and an angry loan shark out to collect on Quentin’s debts.  Meanwhile, Lisa (Regina King) and Kelli (Sharon Leal) rekindle their sibling rivalry, Claude (Columbus Short) goes AWOL to return home for Christmas, and Michael (Chris Brown), Ma’Dere’s youngest child, tries to lay the foundations of a singing career without his mom knowing.  As this web of deceit grows, all the family drama threatens to spoil the holiday season.

Preston A. Whitmore’s This Christmas is a fun holiday film that captures the real nature of Christmas—the cherished reunions, the many surprises, and all the family fights.  The film has the right blend of comedy, drama, and fireside romance.  With Chris Brown in the film, you also get some good tunes.  Check out this good black Christmas movie with a few wine coolers at your disposal.  This Christmas gets a 0.03% rating.
