Monsoon Wedding (2001)

Movie Review

Directed by: Mira Nair

Starring: Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey, Shefali Shah, Vasundhara Das, Vijay Raaz, and Tillotama Shome

Monsoon Wedding chronicles Lalit Verma (Naseeruddin Shah) as he plans the wedding festivities for his daughter’s arranged marriage.  As the big day looms, the Vermas deal with the financial burden of the wedding, the ins and outs of marriage to a stranger, out of town guests, and family secrets that threaten to unravel both the wedding and the family itself.  Director Mira Nair brilliantly offers a look at Indian culture that is funny, compelling and heart-warming.  The music, the dance and the vivid imagery are almost as captivating as the characters.  You will laugh, you will cry and in the end you will revel at the celebration of love and family.
